Fulfillment is a psychological human need, which is why as a natural result, human beings are likely to aim to move upward in many respects of life. There are several factors that can contribute to that upward career mobility. One that is often overlooked but can be a powerful tool is business networking. Although the idea of networking can make people feel uncomfortable, it’s a simple and effective way to find new opportunities and make valuable connections, no matter where you are in your career.

Going to business networking events is an excellent opportunity to grow your network, but it isn’t the only way. It can be as simple as reaching out to others within your company or requesting to connect with someone on LinkedIn.

Here are some networking tips to keep in mind:

1. Set goals

It’s important that you have a clear vision of your future and where you aim to be. People can only help you if they know what you want so you have to be able to articulate it, even if it’s at a basic level. The more people you talk to, the better you’ll get at expressing yourself. People are more willing to help someone who seems motivated and has a concrete goal.

2. Do your research

If you’re going to an event, know the basics of the topic and take a look at who’s attending. If you’re meeting someone for coffee, know a bit about their background and have some questions ready. Being prepared always gives you some extra confidence and helps you get the most out of every opportunity.

3. Be yourself

Don’t overthink it. The idea of networking can make a lot of people nervous, but like anything, it just takes some getting used to. The more you put yourself out there, the more confident you’ll be.

4. Take notes

Always take some brief notes after making new connections or instantly connect with them on LinkedIn. It’s easy to forget details when you’re caught up in the rush of a networking situation but remembering peoples’ names and key details of your conversations can go a long way in making a good impression when you reach out and re-connect.

5. Follow-up

If you’ve made a connection with someone, make sure to get their contact information and send them a brief follow-up email. Remind them how you met, who you are and what you discussed. Keep it short and sweet.

6. Keep your profiles up-to-date

If someone you’re networking with checks out your social media profiles, your online presence should reflect your current skills, roles and ambitions. You want to look on top of your game and having an outdated, inaccurate or inappropriate profile can leave a bad impression on those who might be willing to help you out.

7. Be polite

Thank people for taking the time to meet with you, regardless of the outcome. If a connection comes through for you, show your appreciation and pay it forward.
One conversation could be all it takes to propel you in the right direction of your career.
