This year marks a proud milestone in the history of Nicholas O’Donohue & Co: one hundred years of service to the Melbourne business and community sectors. Our story is woven into the city’s history, with roots stretching back to 1924 when a young Nicholas O’Donohue completed his articles of clerkship with Maurice Blackburn – whose legacy is now the law firm carrying that same name. The following year, Nick established his own practice in the Capitol Building on Swanston Street. This prestigious location, renowned for its architectural grandeur, set the stage for what would become a long-standing tradition of excellence and service in the Victorian legal landscape.
Over the past century, our culture and expertise have evolved in step with the legal profession’s own transformation. The firm’s heritage is rich with stories of innovation and inclusion. Notably, Margot O’Donohue, the founder’s wife, was the first woman in Victoria to complete a law degree after marriage and among the earliest female solicitors in the state. Her eventual partnership at Nodco laid the groundwork for the inclusive values that continue to shape the firm today.
The tradition of excellence, tempered by a keen eye for opportunity, has been maintained by successive generations of partners, staff, and loyal clients. At each pivotal moment, whether it was embracing new areas of law, managing intergenerational succession, or strengthening our commercial focus, we have balanced respect for tradition with an openness to innovation.
As the broader legal profession has adopted new technologies, Nodco has been proactive in integrating modern solutions to better equip our lawyers to deliver market-leading client service. Integrated practice management systems, secure digital communication and storage, and (now) AI-backed research tools have all contributed to greater service efficiency without compromising the personal, empathetic approach for which the firm is known. These advancements have also enabled us to deliver personal service to clients across the country (and internationally) from our central Melbourne office.
The firm’s longevity is inextricably linked to the strong and lasting relationships established with clients, staff, and the broader community. Our clients have entrusted us with crucial milestones in their personal and business lives—from purchasing their first home, to the resolution of commercial claims, to the sale of a lifetime’s work to securing their legacy with careful estate planning. The trust placed in the firm, often spanning generations, stands as testament to the quality and continuity of the advice and service provided.
As we celebrate this centenary, the firm remains resolutely committed to serve with integrity, professionalism, and an unwavering focus on client outcomes. The journey thus far has been one of honouring tradition, embracing innovation, and placing clients at the centre of every solution. As the legal landscape continues to evolve, so too will Nodco, driven by a culture that honours its past while confidently embracing the challenges and opportunities of the future.
