Verified: Inside the world of Digital ID with Victor Dominello

Event Description

From driver’s licences on your phone to AI systems that can convincingly fake a face, the question of who you are online, and who gets to verify it, has never mattered more. In this episode, we sit down with Victor Dominello, the architect behind some of the world’s earliest digital identity systems and now an advisor to both the Australian and UK governments on their national digital ID programmes.

We dig into the ideas he keeps coming back to: what a genuine “trinity of trust” between citizens, governments, and providers actually looks like, and where the legal frameworks around consent, liability, and cross-border interoperability are still catching up to the technology. We also get into the sharper edges…what happens when a digital ID system fails, how AI-generated fakes are reshaping the case for verification, and why something as ordinary as health data remains, in his words, “a mess.”

Whether you’re a lawyer, a technologist, or just someone who’s tapped a digital licence at a bar, this conversation is about the infrastructure of trust we’re all quietly building, and the choices, legal and otherwise, that will decide who it actually serves.

Key takeaways

  • A new framework for thinking about identity itself: what a genuine “trinity of trust” between citizens, governments, and providers needs to look like in practice.
  • Where the law hasn’t caught up yet: the open questions around consent, liability, and cross-border interoperability that legal and policy audiences need to be tracking now, before the frameworks are locked in.
  • What’s actually at stake when things go wrong: practical insight into system failure points, how AI-generated fakes are reshaping the case for (and against) verification, and why even “solved” sectors like health data remain, in Dominello’s words, “a mess.”
