Ladies in Leadership

Last week I had the pleasure of hosting InfoTrack’s premier International Women’s Day breakfast, Ladies in Leadership, a celebration of the women who work amongst us and contribute largely to InfoTrack’s success.

This year, the theme for International Women’s Day was ‘press for progress’ or push for progress in gender parity. In Australia, women only represent 37% of the tech industry. However, combined, InfoTrack and LEAP have a 258-female workforce. That equates to 55% of all staff – well above the national average and something for everyone within the InfoTrack and LEAP groups to be very proud of.

With an increase in movements taking place all over the world (Women’s March, Time’s Up and Iceland legislating equal pay to name a few), it’s now more important than ever that we don’t let the wheel drop, we’ve got to keep it rolling! Our line-up of ladies including Fiona Crawford, Helvi Rossi, Emie Fernandez, Pippa Downes and Roni Millard, all offered some very inspiring stories and key lessons that can be applied across all facets of life. Here are some key take-away’s that I think are well worth re-sharing:

1. Purpose

Whether it be balancing work full-time and parenthood or changing direction in a career, do it because you CHOOSE to do it, not because society tells you to.

2. Be the best at what you do

This is an important one for workplaces to remember too. But, as an individual, always strive to be the very best; employers should always hire the best person for the job, regardless of gender, sexuality, race etc.

3. Embrace technology

Dispelling the ‘technology is nerdy’ myth starts with us. Encourage use of technology in your children from a young age; it’s a transferable skill that pays well!

4. Ask for what you want and go with it!

If you want something, you’ve got to ask for it. Rise up to the challenge and persist.

5. Be true to you

Bring your whole self to the table. Being true to you equates to better productivity and a harmonious work environment.

6. Nurture positivity

Surround yourself with the right people, be supportive and allow yourself to be supported.

Being granted the opportunity to represent such a powerful female workforce at InfoTrack and LEAP has been a pleasure. Following the success of our Ladies in Leadership breakfast, we look forward to pursuing parity within the Australian technology industry, and indeed in the workforce globally.
